Smtp.

This chapter is worth a book on it’s own due to the sheer power & complexity of the software packages available to run a smtp (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) daemon on port 25. The most well known & respected (feared more likely) is Sendmail. Although there is an immense amount of information available on the internet, you will soon discover that you may have bitten off more than you can chew :o)

I have yet to find a tutorial that enabled me to configure the sendmail daemon, & most of all to get it to work ;o). The publishers O’Reily (better known as GOD when it comes to books on Linux & Unix) have a Sendmail book that is close to 1000 pages, trust me,..... it is no coincidence that the book is that big, it has to be that big! I have this book & it helps, but it still doesn’t work :o).

I have to admit that I am still trying to get my head around sendmail & haven’t actually got it working. For my purposes it is really not necessary to have an smtp daemon running, but it doesn’t hurt to know how it works, if you’re a hardcore masochist that is :o). I send the mails directly off to my "email" provider from my "Windoze" machine, without using a smtp daemon service on the server.

If I ever get it up & running, & have understood how I did it, then I will add the information here. On the other hand, if you know how to get it running for a situation similar to mine please feel free to drop me a line, would love to hear from you.
